Research on the Vetiver Latrine

In rural western Kenya, many households have to rebuild their toilets when pits fill up or collapse, and affordable emptying services are limited. The Vetiver Latrine, developed by Opero Services in Kisumu, is a durable, low-water toilet that manages waste on site. Solids are held in sealed barrels, and the liquid is treated in a gravel bed planted with vetiver. Two pilots, in Busia and Kisumu, show good odour control and early signs of effective treatment. More evidence is still needed.

This document presents four research opportunities for students and researchers:

  1. Safe solids management (highest priority)
  2. Treatment performance and environmental safety
  3. Design and sizing for different households and sites
  4. Affordability compared with local alternatives

It builds on four learning briefs prepared by Opero Services with CAWST support. Researchers interested in this work can contact Opero Services or CAWST.
